The great majority of businesses run in Malenga Mzoma are small one-person or family-sized enterprises which overwhelmingly rely on markets in their immediate vicinity.
However, the Capacity Foundation owns a truck that loantakers can use to get their produce to more distant markets, including cities where they can secure a much higher price.
By pooling the cost of the driver and the fuel, loantakers prepared to cooperate with each other can access markets they couldn’t reach on their own – and the return trip opens the possibility of bringing popular scarce goods back to sell locally.
